Meet Mike McGuire

When Northern California needs results, Mike McGuire delivers.

No one fights harder for rural Californians and our communities than Senator Mike McGuire. He’s one of California’s few rural Democratic leaders at the state level—the first to rise up to serve as Leader of the Senate in over a century.

That’s a long way to go for a kid who was raised by his single mom and grandma on a small ranch in Sonoma County. But Mike’s grandma drilled into him the family code: Work hard, work together, and never take no for an answer.

Thanks to his determination, energy, and work ethic, Mike continues to deliver for Northern California—even in these tough times. Whether it’s rebuilding after a wildfire, standing up to corporate polluters, or defending democracy from unconstitutional attacks, Mike brings people together to get big things done.

With Donald Trump taking a sledgehammer to our economy, making life harder for our state’s farmers and ranchers, and making life more expensive for every American, Mike led the effort to bring down costs here in California. As Senate Leader, he passed the largest affordability package in decades, providing $60 billion in electric bill rebates for consumers, expanding the renters tax credit, deploying high-speed broadband to thousands of rural homes and businesses, expanding the first-time home buyers program, and making it easier to build more housing, which will expand opportunities for working families.

Mike created good middle-class rural jobs, expanded career training programs, and raised wages for hundreds of thousands of the lowest-paid workers in the state—creating a pathway to the middle class.

Healthcare is one of the biggest costs and biggest concerns for Northern California families. That’s why Mike stepped up to keep clinics open, expand coverage, create more mental health beds, and establish a health care job hub in Northern California that means more care and more careers in our communities.

Mike wasn’t the best student, but he is a champion for our kids and public schools. Mike helped spearhead the creation of tens of thousands of new childcare slots, invested record funding for public schools, implemented free universal school meals for every public school student in the state, expanded tuition-free college for tens of thousands of students, and developed the plan that saved one of Northern California’s top universities from going under.

While Donald Trump and his Republican accomplices in Congress cut federal firefighters, Mike has led the way making California more wildfire safe—doubling the number of CalFire firefighters, making sure we have a full-time firefighting force for a full-time fire season, deploying a record number of fire prevention projects across California, getting more state fire engines on the road, and putting more firefighting aircraft in the sky.

Mike McGuire won’t back down. He’ll work hard, work together, and never give up. Mike will stand strong to defend the people, progress, and policies that make California the greatest state in our nation and the fourth biggest economy in the world.

The future of our great nation is truly at risk—and the path to save it runs through Northern California. Right through the 1st Congressional District.

At 16, Mike began working full-time, helping put himself through college. At 19, fed up with the crumbling schools he attended, Mike ran for School Board — and won. That set him on a lifelong path of public service rooted in community, hard work, and results.

As a County Supervisor, Mike fought to keep local hospitals open, improve public schools, and protect open space. In the State Senate, he’s delivered billions for wildfire recovery and prevention, expanded rural healthcare, and invested in affordable housing and education. Mike continues to deliver for rural California — leading on climate resilience, holding PG&E accountable, and making sure small towns get their fair share.

On the personal side, Mike and his wife Erika are raising their son Connor, with the help of Mike’s mom, in the one-stop-sign town of Geyserville. They share their lives with Gertrude – their senior citizen pug – and a bevy of chickens.
